August 15th. Independance Day. A cause to celebrate and rejoice a day declaring our country a united sovereign nation serving not to any other authority.
And yet our people bow to illiteracy , healthcre and poverty.
Our youth is our BIGGEST resource , literally .
But it is also where the concern lies.
Any fool can build only on his strengths , but it takes a wise man to build on his weaknesses as well.
Thats where we come in .
As part of our continuing effort on inspiring and animating underprivileged students, The Torch Trust worked with KMC Mangalore to spread cheer and happiness at two local orphanages this year.
Abhaya Ashram and Somwarponn at Derlakatte was the converging point for more than 80 zealous med students eager to make a change. The kids at Somwarponn were fresh off a special Independance Day program from school in the morning followed by a big lunch and were waiting impatiently for us , as we’d promised them something special this time
We started with some action songs and games while the KMC team prepared the ‘stage’ for the days main events .
And there were songs and dances and games and a puppet show and fun and dances and more games and a play or two and a Martial arts demonstration and some more fun !
Sensing this wasnt going to be enough , the kids thought they’d entertain us and so we were treated to their rendition of some plays and dances they’d practiced for school . The children there are so packed with energy , we thought we ‘d have to stay a couple days more !
But things must move on so we sat everyone down for refreshments and juice ,distributed a SchoolKIT to everyone ,including pencils, erasers, sharpeners, books, and some chocolates. what schoolkid is satisfied without some chocolate ??. The KMC team also donated 20 kilos of rice , salt and dal to the sisters who look after the children.
We had a small sit down with the KMC students who showed amazing dedication ,enthusiasm and really connected with the kids even in the few hours that we were there for. It was glad to know they were more than willing to work with us in greater capacity in the days to come .
Reached home tired and sore from carrying four 8-yearolds on one arm pretending to be bannanas on a bunch.
They had me convinced
Happy Inde’fun’dence day !!
